Children and staff from Safety Harbor Kids enjoy a day at the beach following a brunch to teach etiquette and manners.

Sixty orphans and homeless children on May 31 were treated to a brunch at Geoffrey’s Malibu and a beach party at Paradise Cove to practice etiquette and manners, music and career development. The event was put on by Safety Harbor Kids, a local nonprofit set up to build a support system for at-risk youth living within 50 miles of Malibu.

Motivational stories were given by Geoffrey’s owner Jeff Peterson and Safety Harbor Kids Director of Trade School Development Joachim Weisel, while assertiveness and manners coaching was provided by SHK President Petrie Alexandra and actor Patricia Tackett. Self-confidence skills were taught by writer/actor Jane Marla Robbins.

After the children dined on brunch and practiced their table manners they learned at last year’s event, it was off to Paradise Cove beach for a party with music provided by the Safety Harbor Kids Travellin’ Band with special guest, Little Feat’s Fred Tackett on trumpet. As part of the SHK Music and the Arts Program, the children were treated to an aria from “The Magic Flute” performed by Debbie Ryder.

When the music stopped, it was time to hit the beach with a water safety course provided by Tom Corliss of Malibu Makos and boogie boarding lessons given by Jonathan Dunker of LearningThroughDoing-Adventures.org

Safety Harbor Kids next event is the Malibu Community Picnic and Concert by the Sea on Aug. 24 at Bluffs Park. For more information go to www.SafetyharborKids.org.
