Local Zack Bornstein competed in two decathlons and won one octathlon in recent months and will appear in the USATF Junior Olympics in July.
Bornstein’s first decathlon was the Arcadia Invitational, where he was the only freshman competitor, in April. At the competition, he placed seventh, and all those who placed higher were seniors.
Bornstein competed in his second decathlon on May 27-28 in Vancouver, British Columbia. He finished third behind Canada’s top Junior National Team members with a score of 6,034 points.
Last weekend, Bornstein competed in the octathlon, an eight-event competition, in Toronto, Ontario and placed first. The win makes him the number one youth octathlete in North America.
Bornstein will compete in the USATF Junior Olympics in Wichita, Kansas July 26-27, where his goal is to win the National Championship and break 6,500 points. If he reaches his goal, he will be one of the few athletes to ever do so in his age group.
Bornstein will be a sophomore in the fall at Oaks Christian High School. He competes for the varsity track and field team and the football team at the school. In track, he ended the season as the only freshman in the state to finish in the Top Ten Dye State Cal Freshman Leaders List in five individual events. Prior to Oaks Christian, he attended Webster Elementary School.
