‘The Producers’ keeps wowing ’em

By Juliet Schoen/Staff Writer

A second viewing of “The Producers” confirms that this is one of the funniest musicals ever staged. The belly laughs come fast and furiously, and the production numbers are hilarious. Jason Alexander and Martin Short, in the title roles, seem to be much more comfortable than they were on opening night, working together beautifully. They are remarkably accomplished as singers and dancers.

There seems to be more jokes and more “shticks” in the production now. I would guess that Mel Brooks, the author of it all, has made it raunchier since its opening. Fortunately, it continues to offend everyone and political correctness is blissfully ignored.

The entire cast is wonderful, especially the statuesque blonde, Angie Schworer, who not only seduces the two leads but the entire audience. The far-out roles of the “Keep it Gay” contingent are played with unabashed grace by Lee Roy Reams as Roger De Bris and Josh Prince as an eely Carmen Ghia. Fred Applegate plays Franz Liebkind, whose responsive pigeons get no credits.

Mel Brooks, of course, is behind the whole megillah (long story), responsible for the book (with help from Thomas Meehan), the music and the lyrics. The other big star of the evening is Susan Stroman, director and choreographer, who has put together some of the most outrageous dance numbers imaginable.

Meeting the highest Broadway standards are Robin Wagner for scenery design and William Ivey Long for costumes.

“The Producers” is one show that really produces. It will be at the Pantages Theater through Jan. 3, and anyone who has not seen it had better call for tickets now.
