Oscar Best, Rick Wasserman, and Michael Fuller rehearse at the newly renovated Malibu Playhouse. The updated playhouse kicks off its new season Sept. 6 with the West Coast premiere of “The Dream of the Burning Boy” by David West Read.

The Malibu Playhouse has launched the Malibu Playhouse Performing Arts Conservatory, a place for actors, singers and entertainers of all kinds to learn, study and perfect their crafts.

Starting in September, the conservatory will be offering six classes taught by professional instructors. The classes are Level I: Acting Foundations; Level II Acting: Advanced Techniques, Improv, Musical Theatre Performance, Scene Study and Pilates for the Actor. All the courses are limited to 12 students per class, in order to give participants the maximum amount of personal attention and instruction.

The conservatory opened this summer with an introductory class taught by instructors Matthew Orduña and Rick Wasserman, the Malibu Playhouse’s Associate Producing Director. Other instructors include Kiff Vanden Heuvel for Improv and Andi Howard for Pilates for the Actor.

The Malibu Playhouse Performing Arts Conservatory also offers private coaching on topics including: monologues, scenes, auditions, public speaking, and voice-over work, arranged individually between the instructor/coach and student. Wasserman, who will also be teaching the Scene Study class this fall, foresees running additional master level classes in the future, possibly covering topics such as directing, the Suzuki technique, the Alexander technique, Shakespeare, clowning, mime, stage combat, circus arts, yoga for actors, relaxation techniques, dance for actors, puppetry and playwriting.

All classes take place at the Malibu Playhouse theatre.
