Malibu High School’s Theatre Department will present the Broadway smash hit “Urinetown- The Musical” May 29-31 at 7 p.m. and June 1 at 1:30 p.m. The performances will take place at the school, located at 30215 Morning View Drive.
“Urinetown”‘s plot is simple. A 20-year drought in a small city has led to a draconian ban on private toilets. Thanks to a few well-placed bribes, the all-powerful Urine Good Company has a monopoly on the public “amenities.” Even the poorest of the poor must pay an ever-rising fee to UGC. Those who defy the law are banished to the mysterious Urinetown, from which no one has ever returned. When Public Amenity Number Nine employee Bobby Strong suffers a crisis of conscience, he sets out to flush out corruption and give the poor some relief and, not incidentally, to win the heart of beautiful Hope Cladwell, newly home from The Most Expensive University in the World. Little does Bobby know that Hope is the daughter of the ruthless Mrs. Caldwell B. Cladwell, head of UGC. She will stop at nothing to eliminate her foes.
An environmental theme, a forbidden love, singing-and-dancing downtrodden masses, corrupt politicians, a ruthless tyrant and her heinous henchmen, a shocking secret revealed, and some truly terrible puns-not to mention a laugh-out-loud script, dazzling choreography, and Kotis and Hollman’s witty and tuneful songs-what’s not to like about “Urinetown?”
The Malibu High production is directed by Jodi Plaia, with musical direction by Jo Ellen (Cha-Cha) Friedkin and choreography by Betsy Melber. And Bill Bixler and his orchestra will be in the pit to provide the musical accompaniment for Malibu High’s most talented singers, dancers and actors.
Reserved seats for “Urinetown” are $20 for adults and $15 for students/seniors. They can be purchased in advance at malibuhigh.smmusd.org. Tickets purchased at the door will be $20. For further information, call 310.457.6801.
