Sara Wan reappointed to Coastal Commission

California Senate President pro Tem Don Perata announced this week that he has reappointed Malibu resident Sara Wan to another four-year term on the California Coastal Commission. The environmental activist and wife of former Malibu Mayor Larry Wan has served on the commission since 1996.

Perata also announced the reappointment of Michael Reilly, Sonoma County supervisor, who has served on the Coastal Commission since 1997.

Perata has the authority to appoint four Coastal Commissioners with his position as the head of the Senate Rules Committee.

Artists needed for mural project

The painting for the community mural project at Bluffs Park’s Michael Landon Center, which will be located at the Bluffs Park Snack Shack, will begin on June 2. The painting will begin after the Malibu Little League Closing Ceremony on June 2 at 6 p.m. and before the movie starts at approximately 8:30 p.m. Painting by the community will continue from June 4 until June 8 from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Bluffs Park as needed until the mural is finished. Volunteers needed for SMC bond committee

Santa Monica College is seeking applications for the Citizens Bond Oversight Committee, which oversees the implementation of Measures U and S, the 2002 and 2004 bond measures that are funding capital improvement projects at the college. The application deadline is June 4.

The three vacancies are specifically for representatives of the business community within the District, a senior citizens’ organization and the students of Santa Monica College.

To qualify for appointment, an applicant must be at least 18 years old; must not be a college employee or official and must not be a vendor, contractor or consultant to the college.

The SMC Board of Trustees will review all applications and make the final appointments. Applications are available by calling 310.434.4402 or by going to www.smc.edu/admin/trustees/CitizensBondOversightCommittee/default.htm.

The committee was established in spring 2002, as required by state law, to oversee the implementation of Measure U, the $160 million bond passed by an overwhelming 70 percent of Santa Monica and Malibu voters. The committee’s responsibility was expanded to include oversight of Measure S, which was passed in November 2004.

The bond measures are funding a wide range of projects, including replacement buildings, seismic retrofitting, safety and technology upgrades, and more.

MHS student finalist in ad contest

Malibu High School junior Kyle Martinez-McIntosh is a finalist in a statewide public service announcement-making contest on “What would you ask state legislators regarding college funding?” The 30-second piece is titled “11,000 Eligible Students.”

The winner of the contest, hosted by The Campaign for College Opportunity, will be determined through online voting. The top prize is a $2,500 college scholarship. Santa Monica High reunion next month

The 18th annual Samohi All-Class Picnic takes place on June 2 in the SMHS quad from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., with registration beginning at 10 a.m.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic items or buy barbecued hamburgers and hot dogs at the event, along with a cold drink. Those with questions should contact Jim Jaffe at 310.396.7027.

Deadline next weekfor SMMUSD bond committee

The Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District Board of Education is accepting applications to fill vacancies on the newly re-named Measure BB Advisory Committee (previously known as the Ad Hoc Facilities Committee). The application deadline is May 31. Parents and community members are invited to apply.

The purpose of the Measure BB Advisory Committee is to provide the Board of Education and district staff with the community’s perspective regarding school site construction projects using funds from Measure BB, which was voted on and passed November 7, 2006. The committee will consist of a minimum of 11 members, not to exceed 15 members.

According to the SMMUSD, all attempts will be made to include members of the community who will bring different views to the committee, including relevant expertise, cultural backgrounds, geographical areas of the district, representatives from both Santa Monica and Malibu, SEIU, Santa Monica College and the teachers union.

The Measure BB Advisory Committee will meet at least once per month at a location to be determined.

Pamela Anderson to host Cornucopia fundraiser

Malibu actress Pamela Anderson will be the chairperson for the Cornucopia Foundation’s “Speakeasy Hideaway” fundraiser on June 10 at a private Malibu Estate. The event will include wine, dinner, dancing and valet parking.
