City awarded grant
for storm water treatment plant
The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission approved a $1 million grant last month for the city of Malibu to help fund the planned construction of a storm water treatment facility in the Civic Center area.
The facility will remove pollutants such as oils, grease and solid items from storm water that is traveling into the Malibu Lagoon. It will also treat and discharge that water before it enters the Malibu watershed.
According to a city staff report, the facility could be ready for operation by September.
The total cost of the project is $5.8 million, with the additional money coming from Clean Beaches Initiative grant funds ($4 million), a grant from the California Integrated Waste Management Board ($500,000) and the city’s General Fund ($300,000).
