I never get involved in politics. First and foremost, I’m a father and husband, but also a Malibu resident and small business owner. Whether it be La Salsa, Howdy’s or my soon to be local Malibu Cantina, I have dedicated much of my life to serving Malibu. With that said, I will not stand idly by and watch people who don’t live in Malibu fund and advocate for an initiative that does nothing to help small businesses like mine. In fact, it only hurts us. If Measure R passes, there will be fewer stores to lease and rents will rise to a level local businesses like mine won’t be able to afford.
I am disgusted and appalled at proponents of Measure R who seem to think it’s OK to speak on behalf of Urgent Care. Speaking as a husband, father, employer and citizen, Malibu Urgent Care is our lifeline. Let me make this crystal clear, people who support Malibu Urgent Care should vote “no” on Measure R. It’s our lifeline and our lifeline in the future.
We will never again have another opportunity to move into a brand new facility that is double the size, rent-free and provides an annual endowment, new equipment and extended hours. This should concern everyone in Malibu — even Measure R supporters. If Rob Reiner cared about Urgent Care, he would have written an Initiative that protects its long-term future rather than threaten it. What he has presented to us is unacceptable.
You all know me. Do not listen to famous Hollywood directors and celebrities who don’t live here and understand the dynamics of our city.
Reiner says “he wants to retire in Malibu, the way Malibu used to be,” but has he really lived here? Does he surf, kayak, hike, fish, go to church or temple here? Never once in 20 years have I seen him at Howdy’s.
Measure R is bad for Malibu, Urgent Care and small business owners like me. Please join me in voting “no” on Measure R.
