Deputies’ heroics save life during residential fire

An 89-year-old woman was rescued from a burning home on the 20400 block of Little Rock Way in Malibu Monday by sheriff’s deputies Mike Treinen and Jim Royal. According to a statement released by the Sheriff’s Headquarters Bureau n Newsroom, the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department deputies were at a community meeting in Malibu shortly before 9 p.m. when they heard the dispatch and “recognized the nearby address and realized it was the home of local elderly woman and her caretaker whom they had regular contacts with.”

With Los Angeles County firefighters still en route upon their arrival, the deputies acted on their fear that the woman and her caretaker may be inside the flame engulfed home. When they entered the burning residence they discovered the elderly woman inside. They found her near the rear of the home unable to walk and having difficulty breathing. After safely removing the woman the deputies re-entered the home to check for her caretaker. Luckily, no one else was inside.

The 89 year old homeowner was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for smoke inhalation. The two deputies were also taken to local a hospital after complaints smoke inhalation related symptoms. They were released a short time after.

Early estimates from fire officials say the fire caused approximately $500,000 worth of damage to the home. There is still no word as to the cause of the blaze but it is believed to be accidental.
