Well I love Arnold, but he’s all wrong on Prop 2. Prop 2 is designed to prohibit the cruel confinement of farm animals in a manner that does not allow them to turn around freely, lie down, stand up and fully extend their limbs.
The horror of battery cages in California and elsewhere should be seriously considered by people who really want to take a close look at where their food comes from. Eggs do not just fall into that cute little holder at Ralphs. Veal doesn’t just show up all spiffy in the plastic wrap at Pavilions. The animals that sacrifice themselves so you all can eat often go through hell before they end up in your shopping cart. Prop 2 is designed to lessen the pain just a little bit. Don’t believe me. Check out Dan Noyes’s ABC 7 report on October 13.
An undercover investigator for Mercy for Animals at Norco Farms in Menifee told us that all of the birds were confined in cages that were so small they couldn’t stretch their wings and they couldn’t walk or turn around without being in constant contact with other birds or the walls of the cages. Some of the cages were so overcrowded that the birds literally had to lie on top of each other. Beaks are cut off so they won’t peck each other. Sound yummy yet? Mercy for Animals investigator found badly decomposed carcasses in cages with hens still producing eggs for human consumption.
Vote “yes” on Prop 2. As my dear deceased friend and animal activist Gretchen Wyler was fond of saying, “Animals should have the right to run if they have legs, swim if they have fins and fly if they have wings.”
