Norovirus continues to upset stomachs … and upsets the routine school calendar … at Malibu High.
A collapsing cliff continues to threaten Kanan Dume.
Malibu gets a new police chief.
And this is an official KBUU Malibummer traffic alert … jackhammers are set to block a lane on Cross Creek.

This is Malibu’s only local daily news.

Good morning Malibu!

Continuing worries over Norovirus has led to the cancellation of Malibu High School’s Open House.
All schools in the Santa Monica Malibu school district have been directed to take strict precautions to eradicate the virus.
And it’s still occurring at above background levels at the local schools.
That means all but essential school activities have been cancelled.
Extra steps are being taken …. which includes hand washing/sanitizing, increased cleaning, and exclusion of those who are presenting symptoms.
Kids who are sick with Norovirus need to stay away for several days past the end of the sickness … as they are still contagious.
And the virus can linger on a surface for days.
Malibu schools have been asked to continue with these precautions until each school reaches its normal number of expected cases of tummy troubles,
Each school in Malibu is being monitored individually.
The district says it will be able to resume activities when its level of new cases of students presenting with Norovirus symptoms is within what is typical for our school, referred to as baseline.

Malibu has a new police chief.
Of course … the city doesn’t have a police department … but the local sheriff’s office is managed by an L-A County sheriff’s captain.
Josh Thai has the job.
Thai has been acting captain at the Malibu Lost Hills Sheriffs Station since 2016.
He’s been working his way up the ranks since joining the L-A County Sheriff’s Office as a deputy in 1994.
The City of Malibu is consulted by the sheriff on major personnel moves like this.
City manager Reva Feldman tells KBUU News that Malibu is fortunate to have Captain Thai as our new captain.

The name of the second traffic fatality to strike malibu within three days has been released.
It was Tuesday night at 11 p-m that a full size pickup truck crashed on P C H …. in the wide open straightaway section west of Decker Canyon Road.
A man identified only as Donald Browning Senior … age 55 … was killed.
No hometown or family information has been released.
It was the second fatal crash in 3 days in western Malibu.
On Saturday … 36 year old William J. O’Hara of Los Angeles was rounded drove around the curve at Leo Carrillo Beach.
No fault has been assigned in either crash.
——
No major injuries reported last night … but traffic was certainly snarled badly in Malibu Canyon.
Four cars tangled in a crash … just north of the tunnel … at about 5:30.
No serious injuries were reported …. but one car reportedly rolled over …. and three other cars were involved.
Traffic up the canyon was jammed four miles back to the P C H signal.

L-A County roads engineers are still evaluating what to do with a landslide on Kanan Dume Road.
This one started to come down two days ago … on Kanan Dume at the top of the hill between Troutdale and the 1-0-1 Freeway.
The right lane … heading towards Malibu … remains coned off … in the passing zone at the top if the hill.
The hillside looks quite unstable …. a 30 foot high wall of dirt has visible moisture seeping out of it .. and dirt and rocks continue to fall onto the roadway.
No traffic impact right now … other than the loss of 500 feet of passing lane.
But once geologists figure out a plan … you can assume some traffic control there while the trucks haul off the dirt.

Today is the day that push comes to shove in the Malibu Civic Center.
The long awaited … some say long dreaded … sewer pipe construction is about to start on Cross Creek Road in the heart of Malibu’s commercial district.
Jackhammers will rip up the decorative pavement starting today … across the street from the movie theater.
Traffic will be reduced to one lane with flaggers alternating traffic in both directions.
This will take 10 days … then from March 20 to the end of April … the trench will be dug down past Starbucks and the Lumberyard to P C H.
During that time …. Cross Creek Road will be closed to northbound traffic at the signal.
Expect delays on PCH while motorists figure that one out.
These lane closures will be during construction hours only.
The work schedule is Monday through Friday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM.

Measure H has passed … which means the sales tax in Los Angeles County will soon go up one quarter of a percent.
That means someone buying a hundred dollars worth of something will add 25 cents to the bill.
The sales tax increase measure needed a two thirds majority to pass.
It got 67 percent.
Malibu was split.
In Malibu precincts … voters in the Zuma Beach area and the western half of Point Dume voted in favor of the tax hike at greater than the required two thirds margin or greater.
It also was approved by the required margin in the Civic Center area.
But it was defeated by voters in the Malibu West … eastern Point Dume … Paradise Cove and La Costa area precincts.

Malibu’s City Council is set to vote on declaring Malibu to be a sanctuary city on Monday … maybe.
Two nights ago … the next city up the coast saw a huge rally at a city council meeting … demanding that Oxnard do the same thing.
The Oxnard city council chambers filled up … as did two overflow rooms … on Tuesday night.
And nearly 300 people rallied outside, holding signs that read “Oxnard sanctuary city” and “Resist hate.”
Organizers of the rally there are pushing for Oxnard to declare itself a “safe city” … as opposed to a “sanctuary city” … according to the Ventura County Star,
President Donald Trump has threatened to remove federal funding from so-called sanctuary cities.
The Oxnard police chief told the crowd that Oxnard is already following policies that make it a safe city ,… without declaring it is a sanctuary for immigrants without documents.
Oxnard has an estimated 35,000 people who entered this country without legal permission. That’s one in six Oxnard residents.
