California had its slowest recorded growth rate in its history last year.

And the recent fires may have something to do with that.

A bad housing shortage has become a crisis in some fire areas.

Plus … California  the country’s most populous state was hit by a slowdown in immigration and a sharp decline of births.

Estimates released Wednesday show California had 39.9 million people as of Jan. 1, adding nearly 187,000 people in one year.

The growth rate in California is now zero point 47%.

That’s the the lowest since 1900, when records started.

Population is shifting … as people moved away from northern California fires.

Sacramento grew 1.49% to a population of 508,172 with the addition of 7,400 residents.

Chico added more than 19,000 people, increasing its population by 20 percent.

California’s population has been creeping toward 40 million people.

Despite the slowdown, California remains by far the country’s most populous state.

Texas is second …just below 30 million people.

State officials expect California to continue to grow, predicting the state’s population could top 50 million by 2055. Last year’s Camp Fire, the most destructive wildfire in state history, precipitated the spike.

The fire displaced more than 80 percent of the population in the town of Paradise, with many moving to neighboring Chico.

“We had a housing shortage before the Camp Fire,” said Chico mayor Randall Stone. “We had a less than 1 percent vacancy for multifamily housing.”

That meant wildfire survivors had to find shelter wherever they could: in trailers, makeshift campsites and on the street.
