I am writing in response to the article, “Angry Malibu Citizens Confront County Fire Chief,” published April 23. The Los Angeles County Fire Department is very well aware of the many questions and concerns from Malibu residents who lost their homes during the Corral Canyon Fire last November. I certainly understand how this has affected their lives. I am also aware of the vastly different nature and speed of this fire when compared with others, and the gallant effort of firefighters to save as much as possible.
As Fire Chief, I have created a great opportunity to work directly with these residents to learn more about what they experienced and what transpired during fire operations. At our initial community meeting on April 17, our intention was to listen and answer what questions we could. We also invited homeowners to work with us toward a mutual understanding of the risks and threats associated with living in a fire-prone area, and then find a workable solution. The newly formed Los Angeles County Fire Department and Corral Canyon Homeowners Working Group will now work to identify major issues, draw conclusions and develop recommendations for the future, using a well thought-out process.
May 1 marked the first official day of the 2008 fire season, so this is a perfect time for our group to complete its work. While we are just beginning this effort, what I hope will result is healing for those who lost their homes and a solid plan to rebuild a safe Corral Canyon and Malibu, based on the wisdom of our collective experiences.
