Over 1,100 people signed a petition a few months ago, and now 400 Malibu residents strong, and rapidly growing, have also just signed a letter asking the City of Malibu to pass a retail ordinance that brings diversity to our centers, limits chains and protects our independent businesses. They’ve agreed to only vote for council candidates who are fully committed to this goal.
Developer “promises” are not enough, fabricated claims and attempts to diminish the size of this effort will not obstruct this goal. It’s time that those who want to continue to make their money off of Malibu respect Malibu and its citizens while comprehending that a very large segment of Malibu loves it enough to fight hard to preserve what’s left of it. They will stand up to protect neighbor’s businesses, as over 1,600 residents did within the last year. This is the definition of Malibu as stated in our City Hall.
Malibu’s General Plan and Mission Statement: Malibu is a unique land and marine environment and residential community whose citizens have historically evidenced a commitment to sacrifice urban and suburban conveniences in order to protect that environment and lifestyle, and to preserve unaltered natural resources and rural characteristics. The people of Malibu are a responsible custodian of the area’s natural resources for present and future generations.
Malibu will plan to preserve its natural and cultural resources, which include the ocean, marine life, tide pools, beaches, creeks, canyons, hills, mountains, ridges, views, wildlife and plant life, open spaces, archaeological, paleontological and historic sites, as well as other resources that contribute to Malibu’s special natural and rural setting.
Malibu will maintain its rural character by establishing programs and policies that avoid suburbanization and commercialization of its natural and cultural resources.
We’re proud, along with all of those who’ve signed petitions and letters, to be Malibu citizens. We moved here to live within the parameters of Malibu’s Plan and Mission Statement, and we expect businesses to honor it. Thank you, City Hall and council members, for working to preserve our city.
