I invite and encourage everyone to participate in the 18th annual California Coastal Cleanup Day (the biggest volunteer day on the planet) on Sat., Sept. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon.

There are seven designated sites in Malibu: Leo Carrillo State Beach (South), Nicholas Canyon Beach (34000 PCH), El Pescado, La Piedra and El Matador (Robert Meyer Memorial State Beach), Zuma Beach (30000 PCH), Westward Beach, Malibu Lagoon (Cross Creek and PCH), Surfrider Beach, Malibu Creek State Park (Malibu Canyon just south of Mulholland) and Topanga Beach. Gloves and bags for trash and recyclables will be provided. Special parking rates are available at most sites.

I know you didn’t throw that trash all over the beach, roadside, hiking trail or anyplace else. Neither did I, but please, let’s get out there for three hours (or whatever you can fit into your day) and make things better. Last year, more than 37,000 volunteers picked up nearly 700,000 pounds of debris in only three hours. Volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent or legal guardian sign a liability waiver in order to participate. (Available at all sites the day of the event or through www.healthebay.org.) For more information, contact Heal the Bay at 310.453.0395 or log on to www.coastfor you.org.
