Pepperdine University has been very successful when it comes to baseball and soon one of its legends is being honored. Former National League Cy Young award winner Mike Scott, a dominant pitcher during his Pepperdine career from 1974 to 1976, will be inducted into the West Coast Conference’s Hall of Honor at an event in Las Vegas in March.
Scott is only the 6th Pepperdine Waves athlete to be inducted into the WCC. Known for his stellar play at the collegiate and major league level, Scott was a three-time selection All-WCC selection, leading the Waves to three consecutive WCC titles. The Waves advanced to the NCAA tournament each of those years. Upon graduation, Scott held school records for wins (26), strikeouts (232), and games started (42). He even recorded a perfect game against Cal Lutheran on Feb. 17, 1976.
At the major league level, Scott continued his success. He was selected in the second round by the New York Mets in the 1976 Major League Draft. Scott would play 13 seasons in the majors with the Mets (1979-1982) and the Houston Astros (1983-1991). Scott sewed up a career year on Sept. 25, 1986, tossing a no-hitter against the San Francisco Giants to clinch the division title. For the entire 1986 season, Scott went 18-10 with a 2.22 ERA, winning the National League Cy Young Award. In the process, Scott became one of the only pitchers ever to record more than 300 strikeouts and a no-hitter in the same season.
The induction ceremony will take place at the Orleans Hotel in Las Vegas on March 9th at 9 a.m. Tickets are $40 dollars a person and will be available from now until February 28th via WCCsports.com
