Who’s protecting coast?

News flash! Malibu is being rezoned as the LNG drop-off zone for the Western United States.

Wow, what an eye opening experience the Tuesday night LNG “public” hearing was for me. I do not consider myself a political activist but I was quite taken aback from the experience. I thought a public hearing was a forum for local residents to voice their support or displeasure with a proposed project. I didn’t realize that is just a way for special interests to bus in their supporters of union heads, Australian government representatives and others that would benefit financially from this project. Maybe I am a bit naïve to the realities of corrupt politics but, quite frankly, Malibu is getting railroaded on this one.

I am not an expert on the environmental risks, but I am an expert on living in rural Malibu, a place so restrictive that it takes years to get a remodel permit. I was asking when the story poles were going to go up on this and the other proposed LNG facilities? Why aren’t they located in industrial areas instead of this pristine piece of coastline? What kind of pollution or safety issues will this bring to my downwind home on Point Dume? Would they put this type of facility 14 miles from the entrance to Yosemite National Park? I think not. If Oxnard wants the project so much, why isn’t it located closer to the land point of entry? It is very simple. Malibu has a small population and they think this will be a slam dunk. If any of these projects get approved in their current form, go ahead and abandon the California Coastal Commission and every other agency that is supposed to protect California’s greatest asset, its coastline. Or stop asking me to wait two years to add an addition over my garage.
