Caltrans announced on Tuesday, April 5, that it has agreed to a new, free data-sharing partnership with Waze — the navigation app powered by drivers — in hope of providing the public with better traffic and road information, Caltrans reported in a release.

In the partnership, Waze will share anonymous traffic and incident reports by its users and Caltrans will share road condition reporting data and construction and road closure information. The data sharing will help provide real-time travel information on Caltrans’ QuickMap and provide Waze users with a more thorough overview of road conditions.

Los Angeles has over 1.7 million active Waze users per month, who contribute over 2.5 million monthly alerts. Waze’s Connected Citizens Program is dedicated to enabling drivers through connections with other drivers and partnerships, such as that with Caltrans.

“Combining the real-time anonymous data from Waze, sourced from drivers themselves, with Caltrans’ vast network of traffic management systems is a win-win for California drivers,” Caltrans director Malcolm Dougherty wrote in the release.
