The Orioles finished the Malibu Little League season with a co-championship in the minor league division. The team was coached by Bill McIntrye, Brad Norris and Sam Gold.
Pepperdine golfers in U.S. Open
Pepperdine senior All-American Michael Putnam and former Wave Jason Gore will participate in golf’s U.S. Open, which takes place this week at the Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina.
Putnam finished second last month in the NCAA Championships. He has received numerous honors this year, most recently being named West Coast Conference Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Gore was a member of the Waves’ 1992 national championship team.
Wave pitcher named Freshman All-American
Pepperdine right-handed pitcher Barry Enright was named a Freshman All-American by the publication, Collegiate Baseball.
Enright, a Stockton, Calif. resident, finished his rookie season with a 10-1 record and a 4.62 ERA. In conference play, he had an 8-0 record and a 3.36 ERA, earning him West Coast Conference Freshman of the Year honors. Enright was also named to the WCC all-conference second team.
Wave players selected in baseball draft
Three Pepperdine baseball players were selected in last week’s Major League Baseball First Year Player’s Draft. The draftees were junior left-handed pitcher Paul Coleman (Detroit Tigers, 9th round), senior utility player Steve Kleen (Oakland A’s, 11th round) and senior right-handed pitcher Kea Komentani (Texas Rangers, 15th round).
Coleman, a Canyon Lake, Calif. resident, compiled a 9-3 record, including an 8-0 start, and a 3.35 ERA in 2005. He was named national and conference player of the week this season after a school-record 16-strikeout performance against New Orleans on March 5.
Kleen, a Menifee, Calif. resident, was a first team all-West Coast Conference selection this season. He batted .350 with eight home runs and 58 RBIs as a first baseman and went 4-3 with a 1.75 ERA as a relief pitcher. He led the nation in saves with 17.
Kleen’s career totals included a .334 batting average, 15 home runs, 129 RBIs, an 11-10 pitching record, 3.31 ERA and 28 saves. His 97 pitching appearances is a Pepperdine record.
Komentai, a Honolulu resident, had a 10-5 record in 2005 with a 3.17 ERA. His career totals included a 21-14 record, 4.01 ERA and 10 saves. He ranks second all-time in appearances with 90, sixth all-time in innings pitched with 316.2 and eighth all-time in strikeouts with 237.
Wave women named golf All-Americans
The National Golf Coaches Association named Pepperdine women’s golfers Carolina Llano and Eileen Vargas to its All-American teams.
Llano, a resident of Medellin, Colombia, was the West Coast Conference Golfer of the year. The junior had five Top 10 finishes, including a victory at the conference championships. Llano’s 73.64 average earned her a No. 16 national ranking in the Golfstat and Golfweek rankings.
Vargas, who hails from Ibague, Colombia, was selected to the all-conference team. The sophomore had seven Top 15 finishes this season, including a second-place finish at the UNLV Spring Invitational. Vargas’ 74.71 stroke average placed her nationally at No. 30 by Golfweek and No. 33 by Golfstat.
