The poles will carry solar panels and antennae … so the Gas Company can monitor gas usage … detect leaks in real time .. and avoid having to send out people to read meters.
The first locations for the new poles have been released … two on Encinal Canyon Road … two on Trancas Canyon Road.
All four sites will have impacts on views.
One Trancas site … is in the employee parking lot at Trancas County Market.
The other site on Trancas us up the hill … on the side of the road … near the water tank above Trancas Canyon Park.
The other two new towers are on Encinal Canyon Road … one at the big loop turn … the other near Avenida de la Encinal.
The city staff says none of the towers will significantly impact public views.
All four new gas company antennas go up for their permits a week from tonight at the Planning Commission.
And unlike cellphone antennas … in this case the City of Malibu has full control on where or even if these towers can be built.
Federal laws that exempt cellphone towers from most city regulation …. do not apply to these 18 new radio towers.
