Malibu team places second at horse trials

Malibu’s Rancho Sea Air cross country event team finished second in team competition at the recent Twin Rivers Horse Trials in Paso Robles.

Eleanor Coombs took first place on Lord Spencer. Austine Guttler placed fourth on Casey. And Cara Julian finished fifth on King’s Rio Grande. Lily Harris also helped the team to its second-place ribbon with her ride on Bohemian Rhapsody.

The team is trained by Katherine Ogden.

Basketball star

Malibu resident Dylan Horn, 7, travels into Los Angeles several times per week to play on the nine-and-under Hoopmasters AAU basketball team. The only 7-year-old on the ranked squad, Dylan was selected from a large group of boys from throughout the county.

The team, on which Dylan is a starter at guard and a defensive specialist, is headed to the Western Regional Championships in Moreno Valley, prior to an invitational tournament in Las Vegas and, if the team qualifies, the national championships in Orlando.

Pepperdine interviewing for men’s basketball coach

Pepperdine University Athletics Director John Watson said the school should be ready to hire a men’s basketball coach next week.

Watson said in an interview Tuesday that the school was interviewing candidates this week.

The Los Angeles Daily News quoted an unnamed source in an article last week saying that the finalists for the job were University of Montana coach Larry Krystkowiak, Fresno City College head coach Vance Walberg, USC assistant coach Gib Arnold and UCLA assistant coach Donny Daniels.

Watson would not say if those people were being interviewed, but he said more than four people were being considered for the job. However, another Pepperdine athletics official confirmed for The Malibu Times that there were four finalists and that Krystkowiak was one of them. The person would not say who the other candidates were.

Krystkowiak guided Montana to a Big Sky Conference championship this year and a first-round upset over Nevada in the NCAA Tournament.

Pepperdine men’s tennis continues winning streak

The No.2 Pepperdine University men’s tennis team concluded its home season with a 7-0 win over the Fresno State Bulldogs Sunday on Senior Day at the Ralph-Strauss Tennis Center in Malibu.

The Waves moved to 26-1 on the season.

Pepperdine won all six singles matches and three doubles matches in which it competed against Fresno State.

The Waves will conclude their regular season this weekend with a trip to Texas. Pepperdine will face No. 3 Texas on Friday and No. 19 Texas A&M on Saturday.
