Kole Smith adds her creative touch before the music begins.

Malibu High School (MHS) students banned together to create a coffeehouse musical experience at Vital Zuman Organic Farm for friends, family and visitors. Students grabbed their paint brushes and added their artistic touch to everything they were able to paint, tuned up their instruments and began a jam session on Friday afternoon.

Singer/songwriter Calvin Madsen performed some of his original songs, while other students joined with a variety of musical instruments, including a ukulele, drums, guitars and bongos.

“Being a part of this event was really amazing because we were able to gather a bunch of great people who all love being together and making music, so this was a perfect outlet for creativity and was greeted with total acceptance,” MHS junior Ella Taylor shared.

People driving by PCH saw the signs and stopped by to check out the event, like Sky Brooks who took a break from Ohio State University to visit California with his dad, Jay.

“It was fun seeing the kids come together to play music and make some art,” Sky shared in an email. “Both my dad and I are musicians, and in high school, I was always making bands with my friends for different events around town. Seeing the students do the same thing (and being similarly unprepared/ unorganized, just as we were) was really fun.”

The students behind the event hope to continue hosting festivals at Vital Zuman, adding more musicians and including vendors. They hope to raise money to donate to the Rainforest Action Network.

“Most of the kids that were there are my students,” MHS art teacher Thor Evensen shared. “I am proud of my students for being involved in positive way in the Malibu community.”
