If you thought the vote count was happening only in Florida, you’d better take another look at Malibu returns. Last week they were counting late absentee ballots, which were absentee ballots that came in after the cutoff date or those that were handed in at the polls. They changed the numbers a bit, but not the final results.
This week, the Registrar of Voters is hand counting the provisional ballots. Those are ballots for which it’s uncertain if the voter is properly registered to vote. The procedure is to let them vote, then put the ballots aside in a special pile and check out things after the election is over, but before the counting is completed. As we’re going to press a day early this week, we can only give you the results as of late Monday afternoon when there were still 183 provisional ballots left to count.
You can get the latest results by going online to the L.A. County Registrar of Voters at www.lavote.net and then hitting the local election button. The final numbers will not be certified until after Dec. 1, 2000.
