Agree to disagree

I’m ever more dismayed by the tone of discussion among writers to your newspaper. Specifically, I refer to many of those who have expressed opinion one way or another, about the looming war in Iraq. Those who bother to express an opinion on either side of this discussion are patriots whom we should listen to and treat with respect. There are may reasons (besides the desire for oil riches or their simply being bullies) why someone might, in good conscience, come to the conclusion that war could be our least horrifying recourse.

Experience tells me that if someone has repeatedly lied to me, anything he says in the future must be suspect. Given the chance, Saddam would wreak devastation upon us and upon others. He’s demonstrated his willingness to do so. I’m convinced that he still has the weapons to kill hundreds of thousands and that he is developing more. I fear that Saddam will give access to these weapons to others who wish to hurt us. I fear for the security of Israel.

Mankind’s first question was, “Am I my brother’s keeper?” I understand that the remainder of the Bible is commentary that explains the simple answer to that question. Hearing what happens to Iraqis who disagree with Saddam (and the families of those who speak out) makes me want to take action. Many thousands of innocent people will surely suffer in unthinkable ways if someone doesn’t do something.

It takes the lot of these reasons to tip my opinion towards war. No single reason by itself seems strong enough. I especially consider the price of inaction and pray that a solution short of war is found. I ask that we treat each other with respect and that we all begin with an assumption that those with whom we disagree are good people who wish the best for our fellow citizens.
