Discrimination

In response to Malibu Fed Up with Road Thunder, Malibu Times May 4, 2005, I am also fed up! Why should motorcycle riders be singled out for “loud pipes”? This is discrimination, to focus on and single out a particular group of people. Motorcycle riders happen to be an elite group of people who happen to enjoy the freedom of the road and the freedom of our country as well as appreciate the beauty that surrounds us on our national highways. PCH (Pacific Coast Highway) does not belong to Malibu, yet this highway passes through your town. If the problem is noise, discuss this issue with motorcycle rights organizations (MRO’s) and we will try to find a way to solve this problem so that both the citizens of Malibu and those who pass through your town are satisfied. Without the harassment of the sheriffs pulling people over, and riders being courteous riding through your town, Malibu will reap the monetary benefits of motorcycle riders.

I urge you to look at the entire picture because as I see it, the issue is not just about noise. The issue is about excessive revving of engines, engines of cars with modified pipes and bikes other than Harley Davidsons, which speed through your town, endangering all in their path.

Perhaps warning signs that state “slow down, enjoy the town, excessive noise not tolerated” might work, followed by signs that state “you will be cited if these guidelines are not followed.” Communication works both ways. Rather than getting people angry, this issue needs to be resolved in a manner, which will work for all. You want our business. We enjoy the coast highway. Let’s work together to find a better way.
