Locals settle in for a day of fun, sun and fundraising at a previous California Wildlife Center Wild Brunch.

Fall is right around the corner, and that means local animal lovers will gather for the annual Wild Brunch on Sept. 15 to benefit the California Wildlife Center.

The yearly event takes place on the breathtaking grounds of the Gull’s Way Estate overlooking the Pacific in Malibu. The tasty shindig features veggie delights from some of the area’s top chefs, as well as sips from some of California’s finest wineries, silent and live auctions, and children’s activities.

Year after year, the CWC comes to the rescue of marine mammals, birds, squirrels and all sorts of critters in need. If you have ever come across an injured seal or pelican in your area, you can count on CWC to be there in minutes.

This year, they were heroes to hundreds of seals, including elephant seal pups that were on the brink. The seals and elephant pups were nursed back to health in the caring hands of the CWC. Some weighed as little as 60 pounds when they arrived and left at a happy and healthy weight of 200. Many of the pups were released in July. They happily went right back into the waves with a new lease on life.

“We still don’t know for sure what the root cause of it was,” CWC board president Victoria Harris said. “But a lack of food was certainly a contributor.”

The CWC’s good deeds did not go unnoticed.

“As a result of National Marine Fisheries request for us to build a temporary elephant seal pup rehab center, and the generosity of several foundations and individuals, we were able to raise more than $160,000 to build and staff with a professional marine mammal rehabber and numerous volunteers,” Harris said. “The California Wildlife Center is now trying to determine if we are going to keep the Marine Mammal Rehab for elephant seal pups up and going on an ongoing basis, as we would have to raise incremental funds. If we can’t raise those funds, we will at least do everything we can to keep the Marine Mammal Rescue program going.”

The CWC’s hospital and staff took care of more than 4,000 animals last year.

Plenty of local fans are on board. Committee chairs include Nic Adler, Pamela Anderson, Brandon Boyd, Brooke Burke- Charvet, David Charvet, Tracey Bregman, Cindy Crawford and Mira Sorvino, among others.

Sponsors include big wigs such as the Creative Artists Agency, James Costa and John Archibald, Gull’s Way, HBO, James Perse, Natural Habitat Adventures, Abacus Wealth Partners, The Malibu Times and many more.

So what are you waiting for? Get out and get wild!

Get glam

Many local fashionistas are fans of the one-night sensational spectacle called Macy’s Passport Glamorama. Get ready to dust off those Jimmy Choo shoes and get ready to step in the spotlight for a night worthy of a major runway show. The flashy event takes place on Sept. 12 at the Orpheum Theater and will feature the latest looks from Calvin Klein, Tommy Hilfiger, Weekend Maxmara, Tallia Orange, Rachel Roy, Madison Jules, Diesel and other top designers. The show is always an eye-opening showstopper mixing great music, food, fashion, celebrities and fun.

This year’s event will feature songs from The Backstreet Boys and a mesmerizing performance by the famed Cirque du Soleil.

Proceeds go to benefit AIDS Project Los Angeles.
