Heroic act of friendship

Jeff Brumagin (my son) and Evan Blazso were born and raised in Malibu. They’ve remained good friends and shared a dorm room at UC Santa Cruz.

On Nov. 6, 2004, Jeff was riding his skateboard on the bike path outside Evan’s apartment complex, when an SUV crossed his path. On a collision course, Jeff put his arms in front of him to brace against the impact and his right arm shattered and penetrated the rear side window of the car. The car continued its travel, biting a large chunk of flesh out of Jeff’s right forearm as it passed.

The fire captain estimated that Jeff lost a liter of blood over the 100 yards he covered running to Evan’s apartment. The blood continued to pump from Jeff’s missing artery as Evan called 911. Evan, who was lifeguard trained, grabbed a beach towel and shoved it into the gaping hole. He maintained pressure until the Santa Cruz Fire Department arrived. Jeff was airlifted to Stanford University Medical Center where he underwent nearly six hours of micro surgery to re-attach muscles, tendons and nerves. Evan maintained contact and provided me with periodic updates until I could complete the 300 plus mile drive to Stanford.

Jeff remained in the hospital for three days. Evan assured me that he would care for Jeff for as long as it took, and he did! Jeff learned to write left handed and completed his finals for that quarter. During the last year, Jeff steadily healed, gaining full use of his thumb and fingers and slowly regaining sensation in his arm and fingers, so that he might do all the things we take for granted.

But, this story isn’t about Jeff. It’s about Evan Blazso. His act of heroism has humbled me and remained with me all year. During this season of Thanksgiving, I would like to show my gratitude by publicly acknowledging this brave act and thank Evan for his continued and unwavering friendship. The Brumagins are blessed to have him in our lives.
