Honoring a legend

In a pregame ceremony Pepperdine alumnus and longtime head baseball coach John Scolinos was honored with the dedication and unveiling of a plaque in his honor and the naming of the John Scolinos Distinguished Player Award. The ceremony was held prior to Sunday’s Pepperdine-Loyola Marymount game at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

Cory Brightwell, who played at Pepperdine from 2001 to 2004, was honored as the first recipient of the award. The plaque depicts Scolinos’ image and lifetime accomplishments along with the yearly recipients of the award.

The award will be given annually to a Pepperdine baseball player in recognition of exemplary behavior during a season or career The recipient will be honored for demonstrating strong character traits, including humility, resourcefulness, loyalty, honesty and work ethic.

Scolinos had the longest tenure of any head coach in the history of the Pepperdine baseball program. He compiled a record of 263-219 (.546) during his 15 seasons, including three post-season appearances.

Our Lady of Malibu athletes shine in track & field event

Our Lady of Malibu’s Track and Field team had three competitors finish in the top four in their events at Saturday’s CYO preliminaries at Serra High School in Gardena. Chase Bosworth placed first in the girls shot putt competition, Julia Townsend placed second in the girls long jump and Dedrick McCord placed fourth in the boys shot put. All three move on to Wednesday night’s finals.

MHS runners win races

Malibu High School junior Robert Woods won the boys 200-meter seeded dash at Friday’s Ventura County Championships for Track & Field, while freshman Emani Truluck won the girls 100-meter rated dash. Malibu High will compete on Friday in the Division IV League Finals at Oaks Christian High School in Westlake Village.
