In response to “Who is the Real Malibu?” and “Joyful hearts”
Arnold, I couldn’t agree more with the opinions stated in your recent editorial. It is so disheartening and incomprehensible that Malibu families have to drive their kids to surrounding communities to practice their sports because their own city can’t provide them with a much needed park with adequate sport facilities. It would be a recreational space not only for them, but also for the whole community, both young and old, to come together. But, of course, there are people who felt joy after the council’s decision. To a “bluff-saver,” who states that “our mission statement acknowledges that our residents will sacrifice some conveniences to preserve our rural atmosphere” and that the “council vote reflects the spirit of Malibu,” I reply: Malibu’s children are not the ones who should be sacrificing their physical and emotional well-being for the sake of keeping a few acres of “untouched beauty” in Bluffs Park. Our kids are the real spirit of Malibu, more so than its beautiful landscape. They represent the heart, soul and future of our beloved Malibu and, consequently, it is their right to expect a place in their own city where they can thrive. I encourage everyone to support Councilmembers Lou La Monte and Laura Rosenthal, for they are ones who understand who the real Malibu is.
