In March of 2000, I was involved in a study for the City of Malibu. I think it is appropriate to inform the citizens of Malibu of some of the more significant disclosures of that study.
“The firm of Applied Development Economics was retained by the City of Malibu to conduct a study and prepare an economic plan for the City of Malibu. In March of 2000 said plan was submitted to the City of Malibu.
“The city’s current efforts
to negotiate a development agreement with the Malibu Bay Company is a possible resolution. (However), other civic center property owners also want to develop their commercially zoned properties and have been unable to implement their plans.
“A significant segment of Malibu’s citizens want the civic center area to remain as open space. The current approach of zoning the land for commercial but prohibiting implementation is not sustainable over a long period of time. Accordingly, the city should commission a study of all tools that can be used to protect the area as open space (i.e. down-zoning, property acquisition, etc.) and implement the study’s recommendations.”
Should the Malibu Bay Company development agreement go forward (approaching 300,000 sq. ft.), and the other land owners were also to develop their commercial properties, we would be approaching a million square feet of additional development in the civic center, not to mention all the additional development in Trancas. What a horrible thought! Think of the traffic and all of that construction.
None of the recommendations in the Economic Plan have been studied or implemented, and
now the City Council is accusing those of us that oppose this horrible agreement of being obstructionists. There are other potential solutions. However, putting the vote forward in November, gave us virtually no time to solve the problems Vote “No” on M.
