Random political thoughts

As the only elected delegate to the California Democratic Party Convention (for the 41st Assembly District on the Progressive slate), I have a few random thoughts about California and Malibu politics as we enter this election year.

Why would any Malibu voter vote for Pedro Nava for attorney general? He regularly trashed Malibu when he was a member of the Coastal Commission, and took great joy in doing it, and electing him attorney general of California would be like inviting the fox into the henhouse.

Why would the outgoing city council give a 15-year, interest-free, $1.5 million loan to the developer of the Lumberyard? Something smells fishy here.

For that matter, why would the developers call the place ā€œThe Malibu Lumberyard?ā€ Don’t they know (or care) that this name is an open sore, reminding Malibu residents that we no longer have a lumberyard in Malibu?

With 10 persons running for the Malibu City Council, and the election more than two months away, it is guaranteed that we will be totally sick of Malibu politics by the time the election rolls around on April 13. And then there is the California primary election in June, and the November congressional and statewide general election, plus the inevitable initiatives, with each side trying to outdo the other on how much misleading information they can put out. Get ready for an onslaught of junk mail and junk e-mails over the next nine months.

I can’t wait to see Jerry Brown debate the Republican candidate (whomever it might be) in the governor’s race. Although he is 71, he still is as pithy as ever. Tom Campbell is the best of a sad lot, but he is too liberal for the Tea-Baggers.

Why would anyone consider voting Republican this year after what they did to the country over the past decade? Cut taxes further? Boy, that accomplished a lot when Bush rammed through his unfunded tax cuts in the first years of his administration. No need to fix healthcare? Then why is my Anthem Medicare Supplement premium going up 35 percent this year? ā€œWinā€ the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan? When? After our grandchildren graduate from college? Elect Sarah Palin President in 2012? How about Rush Limbaugh as her running mate? Check out my video on Sarah Palin on YouTube, entitled ā€œWhere’s Sarah?,ā€ regarding my search for her.
