Rick Springfield arrested in Malibu

Singer Rick Springfield was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Sunday evening in Malibu.

Springfield, 61, who is primarily known for singing the ’80s hit “Jessie’s Girl,” was pulled over by a Sheriff’s deputy for speeding at around 8 p.m. The singer, who was driving his 1963 Corvette, was stopped on Pacific Coast Highway at Trancas Canyon Road.

Springfield submitted to a field sobriety test and blew a 0.10, surpassing California’s legal limit of 0.08. He was taken into custody at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station, and released at around 2:10 a.m.

Springfield is scheduled to appear at the Malibu courthouse July 5.

Town hall meeting addresses fire issues

The Chamber of Commerce hosted a town hall meeting to educate the public about water flow requirements by the county Fire Department to fight fires and related building issues in Malibu Tuesday. A story will be posted online Wednesday.

The meeting, which took place at Pepperdine University’s Drescher Campus Auditorium, was also intended to motivate residents for political action, regarding the issue.

In February, property owners asked the Malibu City Council for help in overriding the Los Angeles County Fire Department’s policy that requires them to pay upward of $1 million for upgrades to an aging waterworks system. In a story in The Malibu Times earlier this year, the property owners complained that instead of being allowed to build onsite water tanks to fight fires, which had been acceptable in years past, they were being asked to personally fund improvements to the waterworks system. Reportedly, about 45 local property owners are delayed in building their homes because of this issue.

The policy change in question refers to water system flow at new sites. The fire department requires single-family homes to have access to water systems capable of pumping at least 1,250 gallons per minute for two hours. Due to Malibu’s aging water system, many new houses are not able to meet this requirement. The fire department generally used to allow water tanks as a mitigation measure until about a year ago. County Fire Marshall Roy Dull confirmed to The Malibu Times in a December article that the mitigation that was once allowed in extenuating circumstances is no longer acceptable.
