Accessway funding a waste

The decision to spend several hundred thousand dollars of public money on improving this [Malibu Road] accessway is an absolute waste.

This particular beach is a mess, strewn with rocks, boulders, and even cast off slabs of old concrete.

It is a “wet” beach, one that disappears at medium to high tide and leaves a wet beach at low tide making it impossible for people to sit for most parts of the year.

People taking walks on the beach will inadvertently find, when attempting to return, that they are cut off from either end when the tide starts to return because of rocks extending out into the water. People will be forced to find the next stairway (perhaps a mile in either direction) to access Malibu Road and retrace their walk once more to retrieve their belongings.

Entry into the water and swimming is not possible. There are slippery rocks and boulders across the entire area and they extend far out into the ocean. Even fishing is impossible because the rocks snag the hook.

Surfers have been enjoying this existing access because they don’t need a sandy beach from which to launch their boards.

We are all concerned with security because many homes sit at sand level and are extremely vulnerable. Several sit unoccupied because owners tend to use them only on certain days.

This is not a cost effective improvement. The benefits are outweighed by the detriments especially in light of the $23 billion deficit in which the state finds itself. There are many other accessways already improved and close by including a large public beach less than two miles away with restrooms, lifeguards and parking. This is not a good investment.
