Previously known primarily for its dominance in water sports, Malibu High School now has one terra firma team making a name for itself: girls soccer.
With two wins last week, the varsity squad has maintained its undefeated record in league play. The Sharks (14-1-2 overall, 6-0-1 league) have been tearing opponents to shreds, sometimes winning by scores of as much as 17-0, 12-0 and 8-0. Last week, goalie Maddie Clairfield had two shutout games as Malibu defeated Santa Clara 8-0 and Grace Brethren 3-0.
The Sharks have been led on offense all season by a strong senior class, including last season’s league MVP Claire Haft (18 goals and 21 assists on the season) and Caysie Beetley (15, 9), as well as standout sophomore Kristiana Konkol (23, 14). The Malibu defense, anchored by senior Kelcie Meyer, junior Gigi Wooller, sophomore Coral Silverberg and freshman Kate Klevit has been virtually impenetrable all year, allowing a total of only 14 goals to the Sharks 87, and boasting nine shutout games. Not even Mother Nature has been able to deter the Sharks, who have persevered despite rain and rainouts. Malibu has three league games remaining before they enter the playoffs, hoping to repeat the success of last season’s undefeated record and Frontier League title, the first in school history. They return for their final league home game of the season and senior night on Feb. 11 at 3:15 p.m. at Malibu High School.
