Malibu resident Everett Powell Frykman, born Oct. 16, 2000, passed away at the age of 14 on Aug. 5 surrounded by his family. In the latter years of his life, he spent considerable time hospitalized due to his progressive mitochondrial disorder.
“Everett fought a courageous battle until the end and now he is at peace,” a loved one shared.
Although Frykman’s illness weakened his body, it was said that he possessed an inner strength, infectious smile, outgoing personality and uniquely “unfiltered” sense of humor that made everyone around him laugh. Prior to his illness, Frykman enjoyed running, hiking, skateboarding and skiing. While he only surfed once in Maui, he often reminded family members that, unlike his Dad, he has never fallen while surfing. Frykman loved Star Wars and his cat “Yoda,” playing Minecraft, and creating Lego “starships” with his twin Ryan and little sister Kristen.
“With Everett’s passing we remind others that his remarkable life is one to be celebrated,” a family member said. “We will miss him every day, especially his sweet spirit, contagious enthusiasm and priceless ‘Everett-isms.’ He will forever remain in our hearts.”
Frykman is survived by Malibu family members: parents Philip and Channing Frykman; twin brother Ryan; and sister Kristen. He is also survived by his maternal grandparents Diana and Mark Kulwicki of Corpus Christi, Texas, and Bruce and Judy Ruud of New Braunfels, Texas. He is survived by paternal grandparents Gary and Annette Frykman of Redlands, Calif. Frykman also had many aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Celebration of Life service took place on Aug. 16 at Malibu Presbyterian Church.
