Pepperdine men’s tennis head coach Adam Shaechterle announced the signing of Tassilo Schmid as an assistant coach on Wednesday, Aug. 1.

Schmid previously worked as a volunteer assistant coach at Florida State University from 2016 to 2018.

During his time with the Seminoles, he helped the team reach the NCAA tournament in 2016, 2017 and 2018, including reaching the second round this past year.

“Our players are going to love playing for Tassilo,” Schaechterle said of Schmid in a statement provided by the university. “He coaches with a lot of energy and passion, and he cares deeply about his players as people. Because of his ability to connect and build deep relationships, Tassilo can demand a very high standard while keeping the process fun. He is a perfect fit for our program.”

A Stuttgart, Germany native, Schmid played for two seasons as a member of Mississippi State’s squad and helped lead the team to the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2015. During that same year, he ranked No. 63 in the nation in singles and No. 46 in doubles. Schmid was twice named to the Academic All-SEC team and was recognized as the ITA’s Southern Region Most Improved Player in 2015.

Before attending Mississippi State, Schmid attended Tyler Junior College where he was an All-American and helped lead the Apaches to a national championship in 2012 and a championship appearance in 2013. He was named the junior college player to watch at TJC and was the Flight 2 National Champion. While in Germany, Schmid was one of the top juniors in his class, often playing professional tournaments before beginning college.

“I am very excited to be part of the Pepperdine family and to have the opportunity to work with a program with such tradition,” Schmid said in a prepared statement. “I look forward to working with Adam and learning from one of the best coaches in the country. Finally, I would like to thank Dwayne Hultquist, Head Coach at Florida State, who gave me the chance to be part of a successful program and getting me to this point in my coaching career. Go Waves!”
