Legislation hurts tradition
I have been diving and spear fishing since I was a teenager for over 25 years. I respect the ocean and take only legal fish and I eat what I take. Free diving and hunting in the ocean is a family tradition and my young kids love to come with me to hunt the plentiful resources from the sea.
I am so saddened by the closures of some of the places we cherish most. I feel for my kids and me. We have lost something special and it is based on a lie.
The “science” these closures are based on is manipulated and poor and the closed door, under-the-table deals and lobbyists behind this initiative are shameful. California isn’t the same place I grew up in. I’m so sad about this legislation and this great tradition taken from my family.

MPAs A-OK
Many people’s statements suggest they believe fishing is now banned from the Malibu Coast. In reality, three miles of coastline at Point Dume are now off-limits for fishing. The next MPA to the north is at Point Conception and the closest one to the south is at Palos Verdes. The vast majority of coast line in and near Malibu is totally unaffected by MPAs. No Federal waters outside the State’s three mile limit are affected. I do not understand all the hate and anger over MPAs. It seems quite irrational to me.

Protect life without MPAs
As a spear fisherman I also believe in protecting marine life, that’s why I don’t eat store bought fish that kills by catch, I avoid buying fish caught with nets, oil dumped in the ocean or anything else-and now Heal the Bay has forced me to do just that.
What I will miss most is taking my son diving-if you really took the time to study what happened-you’d understand our frustration.
