Mary Kay Harrison Moline

Mary Kay Harrison Moline died Dec. 13 in Santa Cruz after a lengthy illness. Born in Los Angeles to Frederick and Florence Harrison, she was the youngest of three girls and grew up on the beach in Malibu. Her father helped build the Malibu Inn, Historic Malibu Pier and Presbyterian Church, along with many other projects.

She married Clifford “Skip” Moline in 1956 and together they raised five children in Malibu Park.

Kay was active in Malibu Little League and Trancas Riders and Ropers.

“She was an amazing baker and always had delicious treats waiting for the kids after school, and piles of pancakes on the weekends,” a loved one recalled.

In 1976, she moved her family to Fallbrook, where she lived for 34 years.

“Kay had a unique passion for animals and was a magnet for abandoned cats and dogs,” a loved one said. She was an expert horsewoman and took care of some of the finest thoroughbreds in the world while working for the Paulsons in Bonsall for 20 years.

She lived in Fallbrook until 2010 when she was brought to the Central Coast to visit her daughter Cathy. Her daughter Cathy and granddaughter Meghan took her to Kentucky for Derby Week in 2011, fulfilling her dream of going to Churchill Downs and visiting the beautiful farms in Lexington. “We had never seen her so happy, and we were thrilled we could fulfill that dream of hers,” a family member wrote to The Malibu Times.

Kay was preceded in death by her sisters Alice Long and Dorothy Armstrong. She is survived by her children Greg (Encinitas), Chris and Dawn (San Juan Capistrano), Scott (Oceanside), Sandy and Ron (Fallbrook), Cathy and Andre (Santa Cruz); grandchildren Kaylen, Danille, Chad, Chase, Chane, Kyle, Lyndsay, Kevin, David, Lynn, Meghan and Brian; and many great grand children that she never had the pleasure to meet.

A private celebration of life and scattering of her ashes in the Monterey Bay will take place in the near future. Any kind acts of charity in her name can be made out to Old Friends Farm, Georgetown Kentucky (oldfriendsequine.org) and Hospice of Santa Cruz County.
