The Malibu Road fire of Monday, January 8, has changed lives forever. The Malibu Road Association would like to send its condolences to the five residents who lost their homes, the others whose homes were damaged and is saddened by the loss of “Angel,” a beloved family dog. We hope for a speedy recovery to our neighbor who was hospitalized with smoke inhalation, and are thankful that number is only one.

Ours is a very special neighborhood as evidenced by the monumental efforts of private citizens as well as public servants. The Association wishes to acknowledge neighbors who helped neighbors, strangers who stepped in to rescue and shuttle animals, Malibu High School for providing shelter, Sandpiper Pet Hotel for offering up their kennel space, Canine Connection for reaching out to road residents in need, Malibu Coast Animal Hospital for opening its doors, those of you who miraculously showed up that evening with food for the Fire Fighters, Edison for restoring power as quickly as they did, the City Emergency Services Department which kept our Malibu Emergency Hotline updated. Certainly there are more of you out there who deserve notice. Please accept our appreciation and apology. The lack of mention is merely due to our absence of knowledge of all who made such a difference.

But, most of all, we send a heartfelt thank you to the Sheriff’s Department for jumping in and establishing order amidst the chaos, and to the hundreds of Fire Fighters who, once again, risked their lives to save all of us and our beautiful neighborhood. This could have been so much more tragic.

We of the Association are forever grateful to share this road with all of you and look forward to better days.

Lynn Griffin
