Waves Director of Athletics Dr. Steve Potts named Lorenzo Romar as head coach for the men’s basketball team on Monday, March 12. He returns to the position after previously coaching the team in the late ‘90s.

Currently, Romar is the associate head coach at the University of Arizona; prior to that, he was head coach at the University of Washington for 15 years.

He is known for his talents as a recruiter. Players from his 1998-99 team went on to make the NCAA Tournament in 2000 and 2002, according to the Pepperdine Waves website.

As part of a statement to Pepperdine Athletics, he said, “My comfort level with Steve Potts and President Benton played a huge role in my decision to return to Pepperdine.”

Romar replaces current head coach Marty Wilson, whose termination was abruptly announced mid-February.
