Commission votes against larger La Paz project
At its meeting last week, the Planning Commission recommended the City Council reject the 132,000-square-foot La Paz commercial project in the Civic Center area. The commission suggested the council should approve the 99,000-square-foot alternative that does not include a City Hall. The vote was 4-1, with Commission Chair Regan Schaar refusing to support either proposal.
Don Schmitz, the planning consultant for the project, said this week he respects the Planning Commission, but wished they had seen the project differently.
The City Council could hear the proposals in February. If the council supports the larger project, it must be forwarded to the California Coastal Commission because it is actually a development agreement. The smaller project could be approved by the City Council alone unless it is appealed to the Coastal Commission.
Road closures
Drivers cannot turn onto Cross Creek Road from Pacific Coast Highway between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. The restriction is due to the Cross Creek Road redesign project, which the city says is near completion.
Cross Creek Road can be accessed from Civic Center Way. Once on Cross Creek Road, drivers can access local businesses and turn onto Pacific Coast Highway.
Also, the California Department of Transportation this week on Thursday will close one southbound lane of Pacific Coast Highway at Malibu Canyon Road 10 a.m. to
2 p.m. for pipeline repair.
