Thunderstorms Blows Past The Bu
Well… that was interesting.
Skies over Malibu went from cloud free at 4:30 yesterday afternoon to thunder and lightning by 6:30.
The National Weather Service put out a special marine warning … as a thundercell was tracked by radar moving out of the South Bay region and into the Santa Monica Bay … towards th southwest.
The national Weather Service tweeted “Thunderstorms from Malibu to Santa Monica.
“People should leave the beaches and go indoors or in your cars immediately!!!”
And beaches were evacuated in Santa Monica … as thunder and lightning were observed.
At 6:20 p.m. … radar tracked a strong strom blowing out to sea… with winds of 40 miles per hour … and the capacity to drop hail and generate lightning and thunder.
It was around a hundred degrees on the westside … but on the 70s in Malibu.
Once the thunderstorm hit the cool ocean air …. it ran out of gas.
Rainfall totals were in the zeroes all along the Malibu coast.
But the storm dropped about a tenth of an inch of rain to the east of us … in the Hollwyood Hills and Westwood areas.

Record Heat With No End
Today will be even hotter … than the record-breaking heat from yesterday.
The highest daytime temperatures in the santa Monica Mountains will hit up to 114 today.
There are no thunderstorms in ou forecast today …. but hey … there were non e in the forecast yesterday either.
Record breaking heat in Southern California continues …
Malibu’s hillsides were in the 105 range yesterday … it was 103 for a high at Civic Center L-A … 1-0-5 in Thousand Oaks.
The heat wave and the record-breaking spike in power usage triggered the California Independent System Operator to issue two flex alerts this week.

Malibu Crime Up – Statistically Speaking
The Malibu crime statistics for July have just been released by the LA County sheriff’s office.
AN increase in burglaries from businesses has more than offset a drop in burglaries from houses.
But … frankly … there is not much crime in Malibu and a small change in the raw data can trigger a large percentage change up or down.
Seroius crimes … like a stolen car … are up almost 10 percent over the same month last year.
A year ago in July there were three stolen cars in Malibu … this year five … that’s a 67 percent increese but statistically that’s misleading.
502 speeding tickets were written in the city of Malibu in July.
And motorists driving above 65 miles an hour … 132 tickets for that.
63 traffic crashes … 40 of those resulting in injuries.
The number one cause of crashes last month … speeding … followed closely by lane straddling or unsafe lane changes.’
Two tickets written for illegally modified exhaust systems.

Sheriff’s License Plate Reader Is Public Data
The city of Malibu had funded a license plate reader …. a special sheriff’s department squad car.
The idea was to pay for a car with cameras and computers that reads thousands of license plates each hour … as it was driven on P C H.
Back 7 years ago … the city council approved the purchase.
Not much was heard about the device since then … we’’ve seen the special car .. but not for some time.
The license plate numbers were to remain top secret to everyone except law officers.
Yesterday … the California Supreme Court ruled that the data is not so confidential after all.
The A C LU and the Electronic Frontier Foundation filed Freedom of Information requests for a week’s worth of license plate data from both the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and Los Angeles Police Department .
The idea was to “understand and educate the public on the risks to privacy posed” by license plate readers in the area.
Yesterday … the Supreme Court said it’s public records.
A unanimous Supreme Court ordered a lower court to consider methods to make the data anonymous … but still release it at the same time.
Privacy advocates had warned of this … and now it’s happening.
