Zev Yaroslavsky declines to run for mayor of Los Angeles
Los Angeles County Supervisor Zev Yaroslavsky has decided not to run for the office of mayor of Los Angeles. He made the announcement on his blog last week, saying he plans to complete his current term on the Board of Supervisors, which ends in December 2014, before moving on to pursue other interests. After encouragement from supporters to enter the race, he considered the idea, but ultimately decided against it.
Yaroslavsky represents the county’s 3rd district, which includes the western part of the county, on the board. He was first elected to the Los Angeles City Council in 1975 at age 26. He served for 19 years on the City Council before being elected to the county’s Board of Supervisors in 1994, where he has been reelected four times, most recently in 2010.
“I’ve made the decision to complete my current term on the board and then move on to the other things I’ve longed to do outside the political arena while I have plenty of productive years ahead of me,” Yaroslavsky wrote. “Simply put, it’s time for a new generation of leaders to emerge and guide this region into the future.”
Arrests made at DUI checkpoint, another scheduled for this weekend
Deputies from the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Department arrested two people for suspicion of driving under the influence, made one warrant arrest and impounded six vehicles during a DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Friday night in Malibu. A total of 1,376 cars passed through and 1,069 drivers were contacted during the checkpoint, which took place on Pacific Coast Highway at John Tyler Drive. Of the drivers contacted, eight sobriety tests were given and 13 driver’s license citations were issued.
The checkpoint was part of a safety grant for the sheriff’s department from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
The sheriff’s department will be conducting another DUI/driver’s license checkpoint Friday between 7:30 p.m. and 3:30 a.m. in Malibu. Officers will be contacting drivers passing through the checkpoint to look for signs of alcohol or drug impairment and checking to make sure drivers are properly licensed.

The Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board is accepting comments on the City of Malibu’s groundwater injection plan until 4 p.m. on Sept. 10. The board will accept written comments on the plan, titled “Conceptual Groundwater Injection Plan,” and the staff will consider the public comments when preparing its review letter about the city’s plan.

The city then submitted a groundwater injection plan based on field testing on June 29. The original deadline to submit public comments was last month, but water board staff agreed to extend the comment period into September.
