Traffic in and out of Santa Monica was snarled Wednesday morning after a pedestrian was struck and killed by an oncoming car on Pacific Coast Highway, according to Lt. Saul Rodriguez of the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD). The department responded to a radio call regarding the collision on the 1100 block of PCH at 5:10 a.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 23.

The Santa Monica Fire Department Paramedics were also called in, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver was not injured.

The SMPD’s Major Accident Response Team has begun its investigation into the cause of the traffic collision. The driver was heading northbound on PCH when he or she struck the pedestrian, who was on the roadway for unknown reasons.

The driver is being cooperative and there has been no indication he or she was otherwise impaired.

The northbound lanes on PCH were reopened several hours after the incident Wednesday. The California Incline remains closed due to a power outage, according to SMPD.

Rodriguez said the department would not be releasing the name of the victim as of Wednesday morning.Â
