I am fortunate to have been able to spend many of my holidays with my Aunt who has lived in Malibu since the early 1970’s. I have shared many “Malibu” stories and have read the Malibu publications often. It’s quite interesting how people (including the politicians!) are very much the same here and back east. And, how the saying “different strokes for different folks” tends to be a true fact. It’s especially interesting when one of these folks has what they think is a “brilliant idea,”
The letter written by Jack Singleton is a good example. He makes what he thinks are simple solutions for the proposed LNG problem. I don’t think he did a lot of research though! For instance, thinking that the Deer Creek area is desolate. Did it ever occur to Mr. Singleton to take a long drive along this area before coming up with his “cockamame” ideas? The Deer Creek area is one of the areas in Malibu that is not so overcrowded and has breathtaking views of the ocean and the Channel Islands. Many of the families that live in this area, moved there to get away from the hub-bub of the main areas of Malibu, as well as seeking less polution, more wildlife, and other benefits. Oh, and to speak for the animals of the sea, “we don’t need underwater oil drilling”! Wind energy is a good idea… and many of the people in the Deer Creek area are already beginning to think of how this would help with their energy needs (not to help with a LNG facility!).
Oh, and as for the “jobs, jobs, jobs,” to quote from Paul Mantee’s interview with Jackie Robbins: “Working here is really about connecting with the community.” I think Mr. Singleton might want to do some of that connecting (especially with the Deer Creek community) before he thinks he can solve Malibu’s problems single-handedly.
