MHS cross country teams ahead of the pack

Malibu High School Boys and Girls Cross Country teams competed at the Mount Sac Invitational last Friday. This is one of the most challenging cross-country courses, and it attracts high school runners from more than 300 schools from all over the state. Difficult as the course is, Malibu runners have always seemed to enjoy its hilly terrain and perform well there. Friday was no exception.

In the Varsity Boys division, Mike Callahan was Malibu’s top boy runner, finishing 39th in a pack of approximately 150 runners. Not too far behind him were the rest of the Varsity Boys team-Mitch Levy, Ben Hanson and Alan Starnes.

In the Freshman Boys division, Jake Greene once again put in an outstanding performance to finish in 6th place beside the medallists.

Kitty Smith was also a medallist who finished 11th in the Varsity Girls Division. Andie Albers, Shayna Forsyth, Kristine Hoff, Ella Beryt and Rosie Stutsman helped the Varsity Girls team gain 12th place overall.

    Another championship season

The Malibu Sharks Frosh/Soph Water Polo team won the Marmonte Tournament for the second consecutive year. The competition took place at Westlake High School over a period of two weekends.

Malibu defeated Newbury Park 8-5, Moopark 9-4 and Harvard Westlake 15-7. The Sharks advance,d defeating Notre Dame 5-2 for the championship. Other teams participating included Agoura, Calabasas, Crescenta Valley, Oxnard, Royal and Thousand Oaks.

    By John Mills

Inspired by last week’s visit with head coach Bob Toledo and the UCLA Bruin football team, the Westside Bruin Youth Football program pulled off a first in their 15-year club history. They defeated their traditional archrivals, the East Valley Trojans in all three age/weight divisions: 9-11-year-olds, Tiny Mites; 11-12-year-olds, Mity Mites and 12-13-year-olds, Pee Wees.

The win had special meaning to the Mity Mites as it guaranteed a berth in the Valley Conference playoffs starting Sunday Nov. 10. The Mity Mites (5-1) play the Pacoima Wildcats (5-1) this Saturday, 5 p.m., at Monroe High School for the National League Championship and top seed in the Nov. 10 playoffs.

    Tiny Mites (9-11)

    Bruins, 20 – Trojans, 6

Jordan Benton accounted for two touchdowns, one on a 32-yard run and another on a spectacular 60-yard interception return. The final score by fullback Vince Lawrence was accomplished on a 15-yard burst up the middle. Shedding tacklers along the way, Lawrence barely got the ball into the end zone by laying his body out after being tripped up on the 1-yard line with two defenders on his back. J.P. O’Fallon led all ball carriers with 112 total yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Colin Cadarette, Richard Knickerbocker, Julian Ritz-Barr and Flemming Christiansen led the charge.

    Mity Mites (11-12)

    Bruins, 50 – Trojans, 0

Eleven-year-old quarterback Phnom Dex Lucci continued his assault on Bruin Club records as he completed 24 of 30 attempts for 271 yards and threw for five touchdowns. He extended his season total to 23 touchdowns in six games. Dominique Sandifer had two touchdown catches. Mike Gerski, Austin Williams and Milton Strausberg accounted for the others. Jasper Robards and Mike Blum had five sacks and several unassisted tackles for the Bruin defense.

    Pee Wees (12-13)

    Bruins 25 – Trojans 14

The Pee Wees evened their league record to 3-3 Saturday with an impressive come-from-behind thriller. Trailing 14-12 in the third quarter, the Bruins were inspired by the nifty running of Nick “Moagly” Wills, who missed the first half. Wills’ effort, complemented by the power running of Joey Linahon (Mr. Inside) and John Helmy (Mr. Outside), led to two fourth-quarter scores and dealt a final blow to any aspirations the Trojans might have had toward spoiling a three-game Bruin sweep.
