A while back Malibu Seen was in London checking out the theater action. On the way to dinner, we noticed that beloved local Danny DeVito was also in town, tearing it up in a production of “The Sunshine Boys.”
After a long, successful run in “Jolly Old,” the boys are back in town and they’re at the Center Theatre Group’s Ahmanson Theater.
This time, Danny teams up with “Taxi” co-star Judd Hirsch for an evening of laughs that is sure to take you back. The two veteran actors appear together for the first time since their popular series hit the airwaves some 30 years ago. Danny and Judd take on the roles of a quirky pair of vaudevillian stars who enjoyed a longtime relationship, but are now no longer speaking to each other. When a lucrative television offer for one last show lures them into a grudging reunion, sparks fly in this classic comedy of showbiz and friendship. Neil Simon’s classic comedy is directed by Thea Sharrock. Performances continue through Nov. 3.
Here’s Johnny!
It doesn’t seem that long ago that you’d catch a glimpse of longtime local Johnny Carson some place in Malibu. The late night pioneer may be gone but he’s not forgotten. NBC has announced plans to do a miniseries based on the late comic’s life. The project will be based on Bill Zehme’s “Carson the Magnificent: An Intimate Portrait.”
The series will explore Johnny’s 30-year run on “The Tonight Show,” as well as some insight into his life off of “The Tonight Show” set. Stay tuned!
Accolades fit for a king
Legendary Carole King is in for a big honor when she is toasted by the MusiCares Foundation. The iconic singer and songwriter is responsible for a slew of hits as well as her smash 1971 LP “Tapestry.” The iconic album was released on Ode Records and produced by Malibu’s Lou Adler. With unforgettable selections like “I Feel the Earth Move,” “It’s Too Late” and “You’ve Got a Friend,” the album was one of the best selling of all time with more than 25 million copies sold worldwide. As a result, she received Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
Now, the honors keep rolling in, especially when MusicCares names her Person of the Year at its pre-Grammy gala. King’s longtime friend and collaborator James Taylor will also be on hand at the ceremonies on Jan. 24. So you can be sure, it will be “One Fine Day.”
