Pepperdine baseball headed to NCAA tournament
The Pepperdine University baseball team learned on Monday it will head to Palo Alto on Friday to compete in the NCAA tournament. The Waves are seeded second in the four-team regional. The first game is on Friday at 1 p.m. against third-seeded Arkansas. The regional has a double-elimination format, with games continuing until Sunday or Monday, if necessary.
Pepperdine was invited to the tournament as an at-large bid. The squad failed to get an automatic invitation after falling in the West Coast Conference championship series on Saturday. The Waves lost a double header to UC San Diego,10-1 and 12-4, in a Best of 3 series.
Begemann ends Pepperdine tennis career in national semifinals
Pepperdine University men’s tennis player Andre Begemann lost in the semifinals of the 64-player NCAA individual tournament on Sunday to Tennessee’s J.P. Smith. The loss ended the career of the three-time All-American senior. Begemann is also a two-time WCC Player of the Year and was a member of the 2006 national championship team.
Pepperdine sophomore Bassam Beidas also made it far in the NCAA individual tournament, reaching the quarterfinals. He lost in that round to Stanford’s Alex Clayton.
The Waves team reached the Round of 16 of the team tournament. They defeated Hawaii and Stanford in the opening two rounds and ended their season with a loss to Georgia on May 16. Begemann did not play in the match against Georgia because he went to his native Germany to attend his mother’s funeral.
