City Council endorses anti-rehab cluster bills
At its meeting on Monday, the City Council unanimously voted to send a letter to State Assembly member Bill Emmerson (R-Riverside) in support of the three bills he has proposed to deal with the clustering of drug and alcohol rehabilitation centers in residential neighborhoods. AB 3005, AB 3006 and AB 3007 would create several laws regarding the mater, including creating a state policy to prevent the excessive concentration of rehabilitation centers in neighborhoods.
Several Malibu neighborhood leaders have pleaded with the city to do something about the situation, with the city officials saying they have unsuccessfully spoken to the state about it several times.
The three bills could go before a committee for review soon.
Also at Monday’s meeting, the council voted to endorse the Malibu Celebration of Film Festival, which is not associated with the Malibu International Film Festival. The endorsement for the festival, which is scheduled to take place at various local venues in October, obligates the city to pay for maintenance and security.
According to the organizers, the festival will include the winners of all the recent film festivals from around the world. Also, Malibu filmmaker Robert Altman will be honored. The organizers said a Malibu resident involved in the movie industry will be honored each year.
