Multiple agencies responded to a call about a boat on fire off the coast of Malibu at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday morning.

Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) Captain Mike Lindberry reported that a 30-40 foot fishing cabin cruiser caught fire approximately one mile off the coast of Leo Carrillo State Beach. An engine from VCFD Station 56, located near Neptune’s Net, was the first to arrive on scene. They were assisted by the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The call was upgraded to a water rescue when it was discovered that two people and one dog were on board the vessel.

“They were all rescued,” Linderry told The Malibu Times. “LA County Lifeguards said that a private vessel had picked [the occupants] out of the water and then transferred them over to the Coast Guard boat.”

The first VCFD fire boat on scene was able to knock down the fire, but the vessel was burned down to the water line.

“There was no reason to tow it in,” Linderry said of the damage to the boat.

The two people and dog that were on board the fishing vessel were transferred to a facility and reported to be in stable condition.
